ICIQ PhD student Sergio Fernández, working in the Lloret-Fillol group, has won the award for the best oral presentation in the Catalysis area at the 12th Gathering of Young Researchers from the Catalan Countries organized by the Catalan Chemical Society.
The oral presentation entitled “Mechanistic study of the electrochemical reduction of CO2 with an organometallic manganese(I) catalyst” describes how by using in situ IR spectroelectrochemical measurements, isolation and chemical synthesis of intermediates and computational DFT studies, the research group has identified some of the most relevant intermediates of the catalytic system. The identification of the intermediates proves that the catalytic system can bring forth formic acid, another product of CO2 reduction with great potential in the catalytic production of renewable energies.
