A review was given describing and analyzing, inconsiderable detail, aromatic C-CF3 and C-Rf bond-forming reactions using metals and their complexes in both stoichiometric and catalytic amounts. Special attention was paid to organometallic and mechanistic aspects of the chemical additions, an outlook was provided for future studies with emphasis on practical features and requirements for industrial feasibility. Selective di- and monofluoromethylation, recently reviewed, asymmetric trifluoromethylation, and radical perfluoroalkylation are beyond the scope of this article.
