ICIQ participates once again in the second edition of the Summer Science Campus. Summer Science Campus 2012 is a program launched by the Ministry of Education and the FECYT and coordinated by Universitat Rovira i Virgili within the Campus d’Excel·lència Internacional Catalunya Sud (CEICS) framework.
This Summer Science Campus targets students of 4 º ESO and 1º BAT enrolled in Spanish high-schools, who have excelled in science-related subjects.
The workshop will take place throughout the month of July. During this month, a total of 28 students will visit ICIQ to carry out the synthesis of aspirin.
Each week we will welcome a new group of students. The students come from different parts of Spain. They will be taught how to synthesize the active site of a drug as popular as aspirin. They will also have the opportunity to characterize their samples by different spectroscopic techniques. Also, they will visit the computational chemistry labs to visualize the molecule and study some of its properties through computation. Finally, they will perform a volumetric test to determine the actual content of acetylsalicylic acid they have synthesized.
Around a dozen ICIQ’s researchers will participate in the workshop. They will interact with the students and wil bring them closer to the world of chemical research.
This workshop is part of an experience where the students will live together for a week. In addition, they will experience the life of a dynamic research environment and they will participate in other activities such as sports and cultural and recreational activities in Tarragona.
