Professor Antonio M. Echavarren named Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Huelva

Internationally renowned for his research in organic chemistry and gold catalysis, his leadership has trained generations of scientific researchers at ICIQ.

23rd January 2025 (Tarragona) – Professor Antonio M. Echavarren, Group Leader at Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ), Scientific Director of the Severo Ochoa Programme at the same centre, and President of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ), has been conferred the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Huelva (UHU).

This distinction, awarded at the proposal of the Center for Research in Sustainable Chemistry (Ciqso), recognizes his exceptional career and his impact on organic chemistry at a global level, “which has earned him worldwide leadership, endorsed by international awards and recognitions, as well as prestigious research projects, making him a reference for an entire generation of researchers working in numerous academic institutions and business entities.”

The academic ceremony was held at the Aula de Grados of the Faculty of Experimental Sciences on the “El Carmen” campus of UHU. The event, presided over by UHU’s rector María Antonia Peña, included a laudatio speech by chemistry Professor Pedro J. Pérez. Pérez, who highlighted Professor Echavarren’s pioneering contributions to the advancement of organic chemistry.

Pérez emphasized Echavarren’s key role in the field of gold catalysis, where his work has enabled the synthesis of complex molecules with significant biological and technological applications. “Professor Echavarren has opened new frontiers in organic chemistry, delivering innovative solutions that inspire both the scientific community and industry,” said Pérez, who also reviewed the many prestigious awards that mark Echavarre’ns career. These include the National Research Award Enrique Moles (2022), the Rei Jaume I Award for Basic Research (2023), and the Pedler Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry (2023).

Pérez also highlighted Echavarren’s two ERC Advanced Grants, which reflects his leadership in European research, as well as his work as president of the RSEQ, his status as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and his membership in the European Academy.

Words of gratitude and a commitment to research

In his acceptance speech, Professor Echavarren expressed gratitude to the University of Huelva and Ciqso for this prestigious recognition. He underscored the importance of scientific collaboration and investment in basic research as pillars of knowledge advancement. He also reaffirmed his commitment to training future generations of scientists and advancing sustainable chemistry.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of the traditional attributes of Doctor Honoris Causa, including the medal, laurel-adorned cap, and ring, symbols of commitment to academic excellence and the scientific community.
