ICIQ Welcomes the 13th Edition of "Mad for Science" Programme

Dr. Carla Casadevall, this year's mentor of the "Mad for Science" programme, is guiding a new generation of students from all scientific disciplines

Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) is thrilled to announce its continued participation in “Mad for Science” programme, a Catalunya La Pedrera Foundation initiative designed to spark scientific vocations among high school students.

The inaugural event held last Friday, 10th of January, at Món Sant Benet, welcomed over 700 attendees, including students, their families, and researchers. Among the highlights was a motivational talk delivered by Dr. Carla Casadevall, Ramón y Cajal Assistant Professor and junior group leader at ICIQ and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV), who is mentoring this year’s group of students.

Dr. Casadevall stands as a remarkable role model for the students, reflecting their aspirations in a relatable and inspiring manner. Her talk resonated deeply with the audience, as she discussed her work on renewable energy solutions in a clear and engaging way.

Dr. Joan Guillem Mayans, who coordinates the “Mad for Chemistry” programme at ICIQ, highlighted the impact on nurturing young talent. Running until the end of June, this initiative offers students hands-on experience, exposure to real-world research, and the opportunity to interact with leading scientists.

ICIQ also takes this opportunity to honour Dr. Joan Guinovart, whose vision and commitment gave life to the “Mad for Science” programme 12 years ago. His passion for science education and strong belief in young talent continue to inspire this initiative and the thousands of students it has impacted. We express our heartfelt gratitude for his legacy and dedication, which remain at the core of this programme.

The “Mad for Science” programme, now in its 13th edition, brings together 254 students (149 girls and 105 boys) across 12 scientific disciplines, hosted by 16 leading Catalan research centers. Since its inception in 2013, it has empowered over 3,000 students to pursue scientific careers, fostering critical thinking, curiosity, and the skills needed to approach complex questions and challenges through research.

ICIQ remains committed to guiding young minds toward careers in science and chemistry, demonstrating how research can make a tangible difference in society.
