In honor of World Radio Day on February 13, ICIQ proudly hosted a special broadcast of ‘La Veu de Tarragona’ on Tarragona Ràdio. The programme, led by Josep Suñé, went live from the ICIQ facilities from 09:00 to 11:00 am local time.
World Radio Day is observed internationally on February 13 every year and serves as a tribute to the power of radio as a medium for information, education, and entertainment. ‘La Veu de Tarragona’ recognizes the significance of this day and has curated an exciting lineup of guests to commemorate the occasion.
The special broadcast featured discussions with local political figures addressing Tarragona town’s daily issues. Concretely, Sandra Ramos from Socialistes Tarragona political party, Elvira Vidal from Junts per Tarragona political party and Maria Roig from ERC Tarragona political party discussed about the importance of research centers such as ICIQ not only in advancing research but also in addressing global challenges such as decarbonization.
Prof. Emilio Palomares, ICIQ director, lent his expertise to the conversation, emphasizing the pivotal role of a research center in shaping the future of scientific endeavors. Highlighting the need for institutional and administrative support, he, along with other CERCA centers, engaged with politicians in the Parliament last week to advocate for ongoing support.
International Day of Women and Girls in Science
Building upon the significance of the recent International Day of Women and Girls in Science celebrated on February 11th, the program sustained its dialogue on this crucial subject. It underscored the indispensable contributions of women in the scientific field and actively advocated for inspiration and gender equality in research.
The broadcast further showcased influential voices from ICIQ, shedding light on women’s strides in the field of chemistry. Beatriz Prieto provided motivation for aspiring scientists, offering valuable advice for young girls passionate about chemistry.
Escola PAX Tarragona’s 5th-grade students, Anna Castillo, and Jana Soler, joined the conversation, expressing gratitude for their outreach experience at ICIQ, emphasizing the importance of hands-on experiences in igniting a passion for STEM.
A dynamic conversation unfolded between Dr. Anna Sadurní, postdoctoral researcher at Prof. Ruben Martin Group and Rebeca Ferrer, PhD student at Dr. Katherine Villa Group, emphasizing the need to ignite research passion in the younger generation for societal progress. Both highlighted ICIQ as a premier research center with the capacity to drive impactful projects and effect positive societal change.
Dr. Alba Helena Pérez Jimeno and Meritxell Díaz discussed the myriad career options within STEM and emphasized the role of projects in positioning ICIQ globally. Meritxell Díaz highlighted the importance of breaking stereotypes in the scientific world and advocating for equality.
To finish, Laura Hernández, Impact, Communication and Strategy Manager and Israel Macho, Research Technician at Nuclear Magnetic Resonance closed the discussion, focusing on “Blau de Prússia” science divulgation podcast (LINK)
