ICIQ embarks on a journey of empowerment and inclusivity to mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ-CERCA) proudly celebrates the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11th, highlighting the significant contributions of women in the scientific realm. This global initiative seeks to foster gender equality and empower women and girls to pursue enriching careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields.

ICIQ recognizes the crucial role women play in chemistry and is committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse environment that encourages women to thrive in their scientific careers. With a strong belief in the power of diversity, ICIQ actively promotes equal opportunities for all genders within its scientific community according to the procedures established by Human Resources for Excellence Accreditation (HR4E).

ICIQ Women unite to celebrate the 2024 International Day of Women and Science.

As part of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science celebrations, ICIQ has participated in a series of impactful initiatives aimed at raising awareness and advocating for gender equality in science. These activities include engaging panel discussions, immersive workshops, and mentoring programmes designed to inspire young women and girls to passionately pursue their scientific aspirations.

#100tífiques

#100tífiques, an initiative of Fundació Catalana per la Recerca i la Innovació (FCRI) co-organized with BIST and with the collaboration of the Education Department of Catalan Government, represents a groundbreaking effort. Recently, a gathering on February 1st brought together all women involved in the initiative at UPC. Subsequently, on February 7th, nine ICIQ scientists participated in conferences across various schools in Catalonia. This initiative presents an opportunity to kindle the flame of scientific curiosity among young girls, nudging them towards rewarding careers in science.

During this edition, members of the Echavarren Group, including Gala Ogalla, Tania Medina, and Imma Escofet, delivered inspiring speeches in Montblanc and Gelida. Dr. Gisela Colet, Manager at the Reaction Technologies Department, delivered a lecture to 1st-grade students in Montblanc. In addition, Prof. Beatriz Prieto, Dr. Eugenia Martinez Ferrero, Dr. Marta Llorens Fons, Dr. Yufen Chen and Rebeca Ferrer Campos have also participated and shared her passion with the youngest.

Scientist in Action…Experiment!

Anna Arnanz, Ph.D. student at Echavarren’s group, is one of the 6 scientists participating in the third edition of Scientist in Action…Experiment, a project within the FECYT Repte Experimenta initiative, in which ICIQ is a partner.

In this year’s edition other scientists from IRTA, URV and UAB have participated.

ICIQ is proud to support women scientists across diverse research areas, including chemistry, materials science, and catalysis. The Institute recognizes the outstanding achievements of its female researchers and aims to inspire future generations to overcome gender barriers and contribute to scientific breakthroughs.

By participating in the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, ICIQ joins the global movement to bridge the gender gap in STEM fields and create a more inclusive scientific community. Through this celebration, ICIQ showcases the vital role of women scientists in shaping the world through innovative research and discoveries.

Global Women Breakfast 2024

Dr. Ivana Lapuh, a postdoctoral researcher at Innovalab, participated in GWB2024 on February 24th, organized in collaboration with URV and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). Dr. Lapuh engaged in a dynamic round-table discussion, shedding light on the pivotal role of women in the chemical industry. The discussion was also attended by Belén Brota, Director of Quality and Environment of the ERCROS Industrial Complex in Tarragona, Dr. Míriam Díaz de los Bernardos from Eurecat and director of H2CAT and Eva Ródenas, secreatry of IES Comte de Rius. The panel was moderated by Dr. Núria Ruiz, coordinator of the Chemistry Degree.
