UCB Lecture Award 2024

Symposium 09/12/2024 at 11:30 | ICIQ Auditorium - Prof. Dr. Kilian Muñiz

📅 December 9th

📍 ICIQ Auditorium Prof. Dr. Kilian Muñiz

Welcome to the 2nd UCB Lecture Award, which will be held at ICIQ’s auditorium next 9th December.

The UCB Lecture Award aims to distinguish outstanding scientists, which have been pioneers in areas of synthetic organic chemistry relevant to human health.

We are excited to announce that Prof. Cristina Nevado is the 2024 awardee in recognition of the variety and creativity of her research devoted to the development of new catalytic methods for the construction of C–C and C–X bonds, elucidation of underlying mechanisms achieving molecular complexity as well as her important contributions in the synthesis of medicinally relevant natural products and bioactive chemical probes.

During the event, James Reuberson, from UCB Biopharma will also deliver a talk to present the company.

After their presentations, we will host a Q&A session where attendees will have the opportunity to have discussions and scientific exchange between them and the invited speakers and share their own insights and curiosities in the field of innovation. We encourage all attendees to participate in this interactive discussion, which promises to be both informative and engaging.

Speakers

Prof. Cristina Nevado

Cristina Nevado graduated in Chemistry at the Autónoma University in 2000. In October 2004 she received her PhD from the same university working with Prof. Antonio M. Echavarren thereafter joining the group of Prof. Alois Fürstner at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung (Germany) as a post doctoral associate. In May 2007 she started her independent career as an Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Zürich. In 2011, Cristina was awarded the Chemical Society Reviews Emerging Investigator Award and the Thieme Chemistry Journal Award in recognition of her contributions in the field of synthetic organic chemistry. In 2012 she received an ERC Junior Investigator grant and in 2013 was awarded the Werner Prize of the Swiss Chemical Society and was directly promoted to Full Professor. In 2019, she received the Royal Society of Chemistry Award in Organometallic Chemistry and in 2020 the Excellence Research Trajectory Award of the Royal Spanish Chemical Society (RSEQ) as well as the Margaret Faul Women in Chemistry Award. Among her many contributing roles to the community, Cristina is currently Senior Associate Editor for ACS Central Science, Organic Syntheses and Science of Synthesis. Rooted in the wide area of organic chemistry, her research program is focused on complex chemical synthesis and new organometallic reactions.

James Reuberson

He joined Celltech in Slough, UK, in 1994 after completing his studies at the University of Surrey, UK. Over six years, he worked as a medicinal chemist on various small molecule projects, including those focused on PDE and integrin. In 2000, he moved to AZ Charnwood, where he supported a range of hit-to-lead (H2L) programs within the respiratory group, including projects targeting chemokines and kinases.

In 2007, he returned to what was now UCB Celltech, shifting his focus to oncology programs and developing a keen interest in hit finding and new chemical scaffold design. He applied these interests to UCB’s emerging research efforts focused on protein-protein interactions (PPIs), contributing to various small molecule PPI projects intended to complement existing antibody assets. His work included leading the IL-17A chemistry activities and other lead-finding efforts for several challenging PPI targets. During this period, he also served as the lead chemist on the PI4K kinase program and recently took on the role of chemistry lead for a cross-site CNS program, managing both internal and external resources.

Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family and two dogs and is a devoted fan of Southampton FC in the English Premier League, holding a season ticket and following the team across the country when possible.
