ICIQ Group Leader and Recognized Expert in Catalysis and Innovative Method Development Expands Influence as a New ICREA Professor
Prof. Marcos García Suero (Noreña, Asturias, 1981), Group Leader at the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ-CERCA) since 2014, has recently been appointed as a Research Professor at the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA). This prestigious appointment solidifies his outstanding contributions to chemical research and marks a significant milestone in his career.
With an extensive track record spanning over two decades, Prof. Suero has been at the forefront of catalytic innovation, leading his research group to develop groundbreaking methods and technologies for synthesizing molecules with unprecedented properties. His pioneering work involves the utilization of cutting-edge radical carbenoids, carbyne equivalents, and metal-carbynoids, offering applications ranging from the functionalization of medicinal molecules to the construction of chiral centres through the activation of C–H and C–C bonds.
Prof. Suero’s exceptional contributions have garnered international acclaim, including prestigious awards such as the JSP Travel Award 2018 from the Swiss Chemical Society, the Merck Sigma-Aldrich Young Researcher Award 2018 from the Royal Spanish Chemical Society (RSQE), and more. His research group has been recognized as an Emerging Group by the Government of Catalonia (AGAUR), and he secured a €2 million ERC Consolidator Grant for the transformative “New Carbon Reactivity Rules for Molecular Editing” (Carbyne) project.
Expressing his honour at the ICREA appointment, Prof. Suero states: “Although I will be working in the same place, here at ICIQ, this appointment is a stepping-stone in my academic career. I feel lots of gratitude to my PhD and postdoctoral supervisors for their education and training but also to all my previous and current students for their work in my group.”
