ICIQ launches a new products platform featuring advanced AEM electrolyzers for green hydrogen production

Companies and industries may purchase the technologies published in the platform, applying cutting-edge products in their processes

The Knowledge and Technology Transfer (KTT) and Industrial Projects unit from the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) has introduced an innovative products platform that presents technologies developed at the centre, including a new generation of Anion Exchange Membrane Electrolyzers(AEMEL) designed for sustainable green hydrogen production.

These technologies are available for purchase and can be utilised in various processes, applying cutting-edge research to meet the needs of companies. In the future, new compounds and final products will be added to the platform.

The first product offered has been developed by the research group of Prof. JR Galán-Mascarós. This technology supports the global transition toward cleaner energy sources by providing scalable, cost-effective and sustainable hydrogen production solutions. It promotes environmental sustainability and helps reduce carbon footprints. The applications of this first electrolyzer, currently available with a power capacity of 0.8 kW and a surface area of 100 cm², extend to the energy, transport and chemical sectors. It is particularly suited for the hydrogen and green hydrogen markets, as well as for electrolyzer manufacturers.

This new generation of AEM Electrolyzers combines the efficiency of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzers with the scalability of Alkaline Electrolyzers (AE). Their production costs are significantly reduced, as they are developed without the use of noble or critical materials. These electrolyzers feature an environmentally friendly design, being free from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and operate in non-corrosive, diluted electrolyte conditions, minimizing environmental impact. Their compact design maximizes efficiency while reducing space requirements, making them ideal for diverse applications. Additionally, they are designed to integrate seamlessly with renewable energy sources, and handle ON-OFF power conditions efficiently.
