Will it float?

Objective: The objective of this practice is to understand the behavior of different foods in carbonated water

  • Laboratory materials

    Beaker

  • Reagents

    Carbonated water

    Raisins

    Soup pasta

    Lentils

  • Questions

Are the three types of food behaving similarly? Can you explain the difference behavior?

Procedure

  • Fulfill the beaker with carbonated water and add the different types of food
  • Observe what happens.

Theoretical explanation

In this experiment, the raisins are denser than water and will sink to the bottom of the beaker. Then, carbon dioxide (CO2) bubbles stick to the surface of the raisins (the rougher the surface, the better they stick), and when there are enough bubbles surrounding it, the raisin rises to the surface. When it reaches the surface makes contact with the air, the bubbles burst, and the CO2 is released. Now, the raisin becomes heavy again and sinks back down.
