Cuando el silicato sódico se combina con etanol, las moléculas de silicato (monómeros) empiezan a unirse entre sí, formando cadenas que llamamos polímeros. Esta reacción se denomina polimerización. Las cadenas formadas acaban entrecruzándose, formando redes tridimensionales que hacen que el material se endurezca y pase de líquido a sólido.
