On September 18th, PHOTOSINT partners gathered at the Insitute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ-CERCA) to discuss future steps for hydrogen and methanol production
The PHOTOSINT project, a pioneering initiative aimed at producing hydrogen and methanol from wastewater, CO₂ and sunlight, started one year ago. To mark this milestone, project partners gathered on September 18th, 2024, for a consortium meeting at ICIQ to review the progress made, strengthen collaborative efforts and strategize the next steps.
The meeting included detailed presentations on electrode materials and catalyst devices, PEC cell system configurations, process modeling and technology implementation. The event also featured sessions on communication strategies and project management. The day concluded with a general assembly meeting and a tour of the ICIQ facilities, emphasizing the project’s achievements and setting the stage for future developments in sustainable energy solutions.
The project is funded with €5M by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme, with ICIQ playing a crucial role through the expertise of Prof. Julio Lloret-Fillol’s research group.
About PHOTOSINT:
This project aims to develop a photo-electrochemical cell (PEC) capable of converting wastewater and CO₂ into valuable fuels, such as hydrogen and methanol, using only sunlight as an energy source. The project timeline spans from September 2023 to August 2027.
It is led by Idener and brings together a consortium of research institutions and industrial partners from across Europe including: NIC – National Institute of Chemistry, ICIQ – Institut Català d’Investigació Química, RINA-CSM, BNIG – Bioenergy Nigritas, STE – Steklarna Hrastnik, Kneia, EMU – Eesti Maaülikool, Hysytech, UPA – Université Paris Cité, CNRS – Centre National de Recherche Scientifique, CSIC – Centro Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Redoxme, Azomures and Torrecid.
