Researchers on theoretical and computational chemistry meet at ICIQ

27th November 2015 – ICIQ-FIFC-symp-headerThe ICIQ held this week the “ICIQ-FIFC Spain-Japan Joint Symposium on Theoretical and Computational Chemistry of Complex Systems”, co-organized between the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia and the Fukui Institute for Fundamental Chemistry.

The symposium hosted researchers from Japan and Spain working in the general field of computational chemistry. Computational chemistry is applied to the study of a variety of  chemical processes with the goal of understanding reaction mechanisms and applying this knowledge to the design of more efficient processes. It can also be applied for predicting the behaviour of molecules or systems that have not yet been prepared in the laboratory and thus help to more effective design thereof. The wide range of topics that have been discussed during the conference highlights the broad scope of this area of chemistry.

“The main objective of this symposium is to exchange knowledge between researchers from both countries and strengthen the ties that could lead to future collaborations ” -says professor Feliu Maseras, member of the organising committee.

At ICIQ, there are three research groups led by professors Bo, López and Maseras working in the field of theoretical and computational chemistry. Their work focuses on the study of catalytic processes both homogeneous and heterogeneous, polyoxometalates and supramolecular chemistry. Currently they are also working, in collaboration with the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, in the development of the ioChem-BD platform for Big Data management in computational chemistry.
