The article Direct Asymmetric Vinylogous Michael Addition of Cyclic Enones to Nitroalkenes via Dienamine Catalysis, coauthored by Prof. Melchiorre and published in Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci U.S.A. 2010, 107, 20642-20647, has been selected by the Editorial Board of SYNFACT for its important insights.In this work, the authors have found that primarly amine catalysis provides an efficient way to address the synthetic issue connected with the enantioselective carbon-carbon bond formation gamma to a carbonyl group, promoting vinylogous nucleophilicity upon selective activation of unmodified cyclic unsaturated ketones. The study confirms the ability of chiral primary amines to impart unique reactivity profiles, thus expanding the potential of asymmetric aminocatalysis.
