Abstract
Complexes with N-heterocyclic pincer ligands give dearomatized products under basic conditions. The latter were proposed by Milstein to act as catalytic intermediates in the reduction of carbonyl substrates under H2 pressure. Our recent work has demonstrated that the aromatic ligand backbone of N-heterocyclic ligands is susceptible to hydrogenation under the catalytic conditions. This presentation deals with the reactivity and structure of a series of bipyridine and phenanthroline-based NNP complexes of ruthenium and osmium. The catalytic activity of the new complexes has been tested in ester reduction under hydrogen. Some insights into the mechanistic details of this catalytic reaction have been obtained with the help of DFT calculations.
