Biosensing Strategies for Small and Large Molecule Healthcare Indicators
Saccharide sensing using both bio and chemo recognition elements will be presented using redox active/mediated electrochemical transducers. This will include sialic acid redox probes, lactic acid, lactose and glutamate biosensors with the latter extended to protein biomarkers of liver disease (alanine aminotransferase and g-glutamyl transpeptidase). Exploitation of whole cell electrochemical biosensors can aid cytotoxicity studies of engineered nanoparticles. This involved electrochemical assay development of acid phosphatase activity which was transferred to a portable in house designed and fabricated biochip which enabled cell culture, fluidic delivery and detection of redox molecules at screen printed transducers. IC50 values were estimated for model toxins including quantum dots.
